Benefits of Sourdough

The Sweetness of Sourdough:  We will be talking about this and other super foods @ Come Learn with Me on Wednesday!

Yummmmmy!  I love Sundays, relaxing next to the fireplace as the sun comes out.  Jack in the kitchen whipping up some amazing sourdough pancakes with his 150 yr old starter!  Couldn’t be better. 

Jack was so excited about this starter that Judy gave him.  She is the baker at Calderas, our family restaurant and was so generous to give him a start for his Birthday!

I just enjoyed 2 excellent Sourdough pancakes for breakfast & feel completely satisfied. If you do not have sourdough start, get some!  This live concoction of flour & water is packed full of beneficial enzymes, vitamins & minerals.  It kept our ancestors alive as they crossed the Oregon trail!!!

Sourdough Benefits:

1. Glycemic Index Diet – Need to eat food low on the glycemic chart?  Sourdough is a complex carbohydrate that converts to energy not fat.  Sourdough bread are around 68 on the glycemic index compared to most other breads at 100. 

2. Lactobacillus – Need some live enzymes in your gut to help aid digestion?  Sourdough is brimming with Lactobacillus, which is the most important of the bacteria found in sourdough. It produces lactic, formic and acetic acids which help prevent harmful organisms, including E. coli, from taking root. 

3. Biotin – Need some vitamins? B-Complex vitamins, such as biotin, are contained in sourdough. Biotin is an important element in cell growth, the metabolizing of fats and amino acids and the production of fatty acids.
